Mold making materials

Back to Index

We manufacture a series of specially formulated flexible mold making materials as well as a range of both rigid and flexible materials suitable for casting.

Guide to the right mold making material

Rigid Molds Verses Flexible Molds:

Flexible Molds are used when you have two or more of the following characteristics in the object you are casting:

The finished object is cast in a rigid or non flexible material.

The object has a substantial amount of detail in the object.

The detail of the object has an undercut (an area where the material goes underneath a raised part of the object or the surface curves underneath itself).

Rigid molds are used when the finished cast object:

Is cast in flexible materials and there are no significant undercuts or

The cast object is rigid and very simple in design with no undercuts or

The cast object is rigid and can be made in a mold with two or more parts that can be removed separately.

Flexible Mold making material

HIGH STRENGTH SILICONE RUBBER RTV 500

This is the premium flexible mold making material that combines ease of use with quality results. It allows highly accurate reproduction of detail and accommodates undercut areas well. It can be used for most resins, for candle making, for high temperatures like liquid vinyls, for plaster castings and others. It is durable enough for multiple castings.

SILICONE CASTING RUBBER RTV 100A

This is a less expensive version of the RTV 500. It is more rigid which helps support large flat castings. It may be more durable for multiple castings. It does not support as fine a detail and does not work as well with fine undercuts as the RTV 500. Most applications benefit from the characteristics of the RTV 500.

URETHANE CASTING RUBBER Haflex 1950-1A

This provides a solid flexible dark red colored mold with good detail and very durable casting quality. It requires the two components be weighed to get the right curing quality. It is ideal for most resins and low temperature curing materials including plasters.

URETHANE CASTING RUBBER, Haflex 1950-1A-Black

The same material as the red one above except this is black. Both of these can be used to coat surfaces.

LATEX COATING RUBBER, Haflex 1960-1

This can be used to create very flexible and thin molds with good detail. It is air dried and requires several coats to get a descent mold. The latex has ammonia in it so it is less suitable for body impressions. It would require a good supporting mold (mother mold) to preserve the shape of your original. It makes a good surface coating that can be skin like in nature.

ALGINATE,

This is the answer to creating impressions of the human body. It is totally non toxic and is just like the material used by dentists. This is the starting point for life casting.

Rigid Mold Making Material

Hydrocal

An easy to use way low cost way to create a hard durable rigid mold. It can also be used to test your flexible mold with low cost material. It is also very useful in creating a support for your flexible mold.

Mold Plaster

Similar uses as Hydrocal only not as hard or durable. Exposure to moisture reduces the working time.

Ready made molds

These are standard shapes made out of polyethylene or polypropylene and are an easy way to create cast objects.

HUNDREDS OF USES FOR THE ARTIST, HOBBYIST OR THE INDUSTRIALIST

MOLD RELEASE AND SEALING PRODUCTS

Whenever polyester, polyurethane, epoxy and phenolic resin formulations are molded, there exists the necessity for suitable mold preparation materials to assure optimum surface reproduction and separation of the molded object from the mold. The preparation operations involve sealing and smoothing of non-metallic molds and cleaning and polishing of metallic molds.

SEALING WITH MOLDKOTE: Non-metallic molds are sealed to prevent gases and moisture within the mold from contacting the molded plastics. Sealing also provides a suitable foundation for the subsequent application of the release agent. The MOLDKOTES are usually film forming materials which have no adhesion to the plastics and yet provide a continuous film coating over every detail of a mold without altering the surface or changing the mold's dimensions.

MOLD RELEASE: Usually a paste, wax or silicone coating is applied over the MOLDKOTE prior to the application of the plastics. This assures separation from the mold.

MOLD RELEASE, Moldkote 1908 (Paste Type) : Cream colored paste, usable on both metallic and non-metallic surfaces. May be applied to wet, as well as dry plasters. Will readily release polyester, phenolic, polyurethane and epoxy resins. It is not affected by temperatures up to 500̊F. It will not give high gloss parting, leaving application marks on the part surface. It is readily dissolved by solvents and styrene; hence, high styrene resins and resin solvent solutions should not be used against 1908. It is not water soluble, but can be cleaned off with detergent containing water or most thinners. ACETONE : This is a general purpose solvent for most resins. It is used as a cleaner and a thinner.

EPOXY THINNER HAPEX 1200-92 : A low viscosity 100% epoxy resin which can be used by itself or as a viscosity reducing additive for higher viscosity epoxy resins. It is necessary to compensate for the addition of 1200-92 by changing the curing agent ratio. The easiest way is to add the correct amount of hardener for the chosen epoxy resin, and the correct amount of hardener for the amount of 1200-92 to be used. The correct amount of hardener for 1200-92 can be determined by substituting 1200-92 for 1200A resin on the Hardener Guide Chart

METHYLENE CHLORIDE : A product used for cleaning and stripping cured and uncured polyesters, epoxies and phenolics. It is non-flammable.

RESIN CLEANER 1905 : An all purpose cleaner for uncured resins. More efficient than acetone. An excellent thinner for 1906, 1908 and other release agents. Very flammable. Flash point 470F.
